J. George Skarlis, 87, of Waterloo, died on Monday, November 18, 2024, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital.
George was born on June 22, 1937, in Mason City, son of Thomas and Evangeline Manolis Skarlis.
He graduated from Mason City High School in 1955; earned his Associates Degree from Mason City Junior College and attended the University of Iowa. He served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1962 receiving an honorable discharge.
He married Shirley Pannhoff on January 30, 1965, in Owatonna, MN; she preceded him in death on March 11, 2024.
George owned and operated Community Builders in Waterloo for 60+ years.
He was a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, was a member of the AHEPA (men's group) in the church and served on the church board. He was a member of Waterloo Elks Club BPO #290 for many years.
George had a great love for his family, especially his grandchildren. His business was a large part of his life. He had a very strong work ethic and a love for personal sales. George was very proud of his Greek heritage and Greek Orthodox faith. He even wrote a book documenting the history of the Skarlis and Manolis families. He and Shirley spent many winters in Florida where he loved to play golf and spend time with their many friends. George had a tremendous sense of humor and was a great storyteller. He also enjoyed cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son John (Angela) Skarlis of Cedar Falls; daughter-in-law Michelle (Brad) Buhrow of Denver, IA; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother James (Sandra) Skarlis of Waterloo; sister in law Nancy Skarlis of Vero Beach, FL; godmother Joy Galios of Denver, CO; and his long-time business associate Mark Ott.
George is preceded in death by his parents; wife; son Thomas Skarlis; daughter Susan Ott-Wisner; brothers, Gus Skarlis and Anthony "Tony" Skarlis; and his godfather Tom Galios.
Services: 10:30 AM on Friday, November 22, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church followed by burial at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #138, VFW Post #1623, and Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard.
Visitation: 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, November 21, with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 at Locke on 4th, 1519 West 4th Street, Waterloo.
Memorials may be directed to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
