Eugene “Gene” Haack, 93, of Waterloo, died at Cedar Valley Hospice Home Tuesday, June 19, 2018.
He was born April 10, 1925 in Butler County, IA, son of Burdette and Thelma Hersey Haack. He graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1943.
Gene married Mary E. “Betty” McKevitt on January 26, 1952 in Charles City. She died March 3, 2009.
He was a machine operator at Mead Containers for 22 years retiring in 1985. From 1950‑1963, he was a professional baseball umpire in the Midwest; in 1955, he was an umpire in the Illinois–Indiana–Iowa Baseball League (Three I League).
He was a member of Waterloo Gospel Hall on Western Ave. He and Betty volunteered at church mailing bible tracts to area residents. He was also a church usher. He volunteered at the Waterloo Senior Center and was in charge of getting speakers for the weekly bible study.
Gene is survived by his brothers, Robert and Donald (Bonnie), both of Davenport; a sister, Berdyne Escher of Parkersburg and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister Hilda Fraser; two brother in laws, Elmore Fraser and John Escher and a sister in law, Jeanne Haack.
