Doris Saathoff

Doris Saathoff, 81, of Dike, died Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at Grundy Care Center. She was born August 29, 1943, in New Hampton, daughter of Orlando “Len” and Genevieve “Gen” (Anderson) Thompson. She graduated from East Waterloo High School.

Doris married Harold Saathoff on June 17, 1967, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo. After marriage they lived in Dike and then Waterloo for seven years, until moving to Harold’s family’s farm four miles west of Dike. Together they raised hogs and crops. She also worked at Crossroads Ford, and Greater Iowa Leasing until her sons were born when she became a stay-at-home mom. Once her sons were in school, she worked at Kwik Star in Dike and was a teacher’s associate for 15 years at Bremwood.

Doris was an active person-she and Harold were on a bowling league and liked to go to the races at Tunis and Independence. They frequented the Amish shops for jellies and bread, but Doris herself was an amazing cook. She loved to camp and have picnics and take long drives. She liked to draw, play her piano, shopping at ReStore and attending auctions. Above all Doris was an amazing mom and grandma.

She is survived by her husband Harold of 58 years; her sons, Mike (Barb) Saathoff of Davenport and their children, Elizabeth (Michael Guhin) and Abigail Saathoff, and John (Karie Dominick) Saathoff of Cedar Falls and their children Emily, Jonathan, and Nathan; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, twin sister Diane (Richard) Schwab, brother Orin (Helen) Thompson, and nephews Brian and Brad Schwab.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls. Visitation Friday June 20, from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM Friday, June 20, 2025, at Locke on 4th, Waterloo. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Dike.
