Barbara Marie Smith

Barbara M. Smith, 88, of Cedar Falls, died on Monday, August 4, 2025, at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born September 1, 1936, in Waterloo, the daughter of Edward P. and Dorothy (Campagna) Trierweiler. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1955.

Barbara married Victor J. Smith on April 16, 1955, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo; he preceded her in death on October 25, 2005. She was a homemaker and took great joy in raising her eight children.

She was a member of St. Edward Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing and needlepoint, making many blankets and pillows. She also sewed many handmade Christmas stockings which she donated to St. Vincent DePaul for many years. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by three sons, David (Diana) Smith of Waterloo, Carl (Janet) Smith of Kellogg, and Ted Smith of Berwick, LA; four daughters, LaLony M. Hannan of Cedar Falls, Susan Hansen of Lawrenceville, IL, Kathryn (Mike) Nelson of Cedar Falls, and Patience Daniel of Cedar Falls; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Sharon) Trierweiler of Sumner, WA; and three sisters, Marlene Wright of Evansdale, Karen Buchanan of Evansdale, and Collett McCabe of Norman, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; a son, Victor James Smith, Jr.; and two sisters, Nancy Sizemore, and Mary Buchanan.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2025, at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial to follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo; also, for one hour prior to mass at the church.
