Agris “Augie” Aperans

Agris “Augie” Aperans, 88, of Waterloo, died on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at Martin Suites.

He was born the son Janis and Anna (Kreslins) Aperans in Birži, Latvia, on August 20, 1936. In 1943, Augie and his family were forced to flee their homeland by the Russians into Germany, spending 4 years in a displaced persons camp in West Germany during World War II. They received sponsorship from Nazareth Lutheran Church in 1950 to come to the United States. He was a 1954 graduate of Cedar Falls High School and went on to earn his teaching degree from Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and served in the US Army from 1956-1958. Augie married Janice F. Abbe on June 13, 1964, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Garwin. Prior to retiring in 1994, he spent 33 years teaching science for the Waterloo School Systems as well as coaching a variety of sports and being allowed to continue his lifelong love of track and cross country. Augie and Janice enjoyed camping trips with their family and friends and winters spent in Apache Junction, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his son, Erik Ray Aperans, his parents, brother, Janis Aperans, Jr., and brother-in-law, Richard Braun.

Augie is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janice Aperans; daughter, Erin Aperans, both of Waterloo; sister, Vija Braun of Milwaukee, WI; and other family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo. A memorial gathering will take place from 9:30 a.m. until the service time. A private family inurnment at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls will take place at a later date.
