Beverly Jean “Bev” Gallatin, 72, of Mahomet, Illinois; formerly of Peoria, Illinois and Waterloo, Iowa, died on Monday February 4, 2019 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, following a brief illness.

Bev was born on November 20, 1946 in Story City, Iowa, the daughter of Emery Jennings and Betty Jane Hanson Tegland.

She graduated from South Hamilton High School in 1965, received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa in 1969 and her Master’s in Education from Illinois State University in 2000.  She worked as an ICU Nurse and Cardiac Education Nurse at St. Francis and Proctor Hospitals in Peoria.  She was a Diabetic Education Nurse at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo and finished her career teaching nursing at Hawkeye Community College.

Bev met Howard P. Gallatin while they were both studying at the University of Iowa and they were married June 8, 1968 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Iowa.

Bev was a member of and sang in the choir at Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria and Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  She enjoyed participating in 4-H as a young girl.  As a farm girl at heart, she never minded getting her hands dirty.  She was a lifelong learner and enjoyed participating in Bible study groups.  She was always organized and always maintained a positive outlook.  Bev enjoyed running and loved to be on the water.

She is survived by her husband, Howard of Mahomet; two daughters, Rebecca Fleming and her husband Paul of Media‚ Pennsylvania, and Deborah Shoemaker and her husband Matthew of Mahomet; and her granddaughter, Emery Shoemaker of Mahomet.  She is also survived by a sister, Marjorie (Gary) Evans-Roth of Fairfield‚ Iowa; and two step sisters, Mary (Paul) Hill and Sandy (John) Underberg.

Bev is preceded in death by her parents; step mother, Arlie; a brother, Bruce Tegland; a step brother, Edward Danielson; and a step sister, Orene Glantz.

Condolences

Howard, I am saddened to learn about Bev and want you to know I share your loss. I have many fond memories of the times you and Bev were in Peoria. You may be interested to know Karen Cotton Winnett presently heads the Department we both had managed at CNB (now PNC Bank) and was helpful alerting me to the Peoria obituary since I am currently wintering in Florida. Otherwise, I would be there in person to pay my respects. Please know that you, Debra and Rebecca are in my prayers.

Howie and family, Rick and I had planned to come today to the visitation, but six inches of snow stopped us. Our hearts are broken because our sweet Beverly is gone. But, what an angel she was and heaven has gained one. I have priceless fun memories of us growing up as cousins. I won't forget her as she inspires me everyday to be a better person. Lois Slobe

I am sorry to hear of Bev's passing. I worked with her at Hawkeye Community College in the Health Science area. Bev was always a professional and was willing to help her students succeed. We also shared many fun talks around the lunch table. She was proud of her family and Howie.
