Joyce E. Sommer, 83, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Friday, October 10, 2014, at the Martin Health Center of Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was born March 13, 1931, in New Hampton, Iowa, daughter of Gerhard B. and Margaret Immermann Kerkhoff. She married Forrest Baker on May 12, 1956, in Austin, Minnesota; he died January 24, 1987. She married Leonard Sommer on October 8, 1988, in Waterloo; he died October 7, 2013.

Joyce graduated from Fredericksburg High School, Fredericksburg, Iowa, in 1948. She was a clerk at the Waterloo Credit Bureau for three years, retiring in 1984. She also had worked at JC Penney Co. and Schoitz Memorial Hospital, and was a member of Linden United Methodist Church.

Survived by: five sons, Peter (Coral) Baker of Redding, Calif., Larry (Lauraine) Baker of Waterloo, Lee (Sharon) Baker of Peoria, Ill., Lynn (Pearl) Baker of Cotter, Ark., and Allen Baker of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Lillian (Pat) McFall of Windsor Heights, Iowa; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Sandra (Jerry) Mahan of Jerico, Iowa, and Lynette (Harry) Banks of Grundy Center, Iowa; and a stepson, Cory (Cortney) Banks of Dubuque, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lorine French.
