Rick Lee Calhoon

August 17, 1954 January 2, 2026

Rick L. Calhoon age 71 of Buckingham, died Friday, January 2, 2026, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born in Kirksville, Missouri, on August 17, 1954, the son of Donald and Mary (Spears) Calhoon.

Rick graduated from Davenport Central High School with the class of 1972. He was united in marriage with Terri Sides on October 15, 1977, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte City. Rick served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1972-1979.

Rick worked in pest control for Ecolab Pest Elimination for 34 years. In his “retirement” he worked in the transportation department at Western Home Communities, then was the owner and operator of CPC Pest Control. Rick also spent time working as a maintenance technician for the Black Hawk County elections office. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in La Porte City and also had connections with Geneseo Methodist Church in Buckingham.

Serving and connecting with other veterans was very important to Rick. Rick was a member of the Northeast Iowa Marine Corps League and a member of Cedar Falls VFW Post #3896. He was a very active member of La Porte City USS San Diego American Legion Post #207. During his time with the La Porte City Legion he served as Post Commander as well as Sergeant At Arms. Two of the activities that meant the most to him were working on ramps for other veterans in Black Hawk county and participating in military funerals. He also enjoyed working with the local school districts teaching students about the American Flag.

In his spare time, Rick enjoyed collecting vehicles especially Harley Davidson Motor Cycles and Jeeps. He enjoyed keeping his yard looking nice and displaying chainsaw carvings and other yard ornaments throughout it. Rick was a card shark and played a mean game of cribbage. Rick loved time spent with his family as well as his dogs, Molly, Barney and Jett and his “granddogs.”

Survivors include: his wife, Terri of Buckingham; two daughters, Brandee (Jeremy) Clark of Waverly and Heather (Mike) Chingren of La Porte City; three grandchildren, Matthew (Wendy) Chingren of Clarksville, TN, Sarah Chingren (Isaac Harmelink) of Ames, Morgan Chingren (Nicholas Routt) of Keithville, LA; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Connie Wilkins of Davenport, Debbie (Clu) Glenn of Albia, Donna (Don) Louck of Stockton, IA, and Tina (Chava) Sandoval of East Moline, IL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Russell “Bud” Spears, a niece, Wendy Louck and a great-grandson, Vincent Roche.

A public memorial visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 PM on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Geneseo Methodist Church, Buckingham with a special military tribute immediately following the visitation.

A public memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 19, 2026, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, La Porte City with military rites accorded by La Porte City USS San Diego American Post #207. A luncheon will be served immediately following the service.

  4. Kendall Daniels says:

Rick and I go way back about 40+ years. I was a young kid and rode my bike into his truck and that started our friendship, Later in life we reunited when I was working for the County and surprisingly we got paired up together to distribute and to pick -up voting machines and both of us had a valuable time together catching up with each other again remembering the accident of me riding threw an alley and didn’t look both ways and hit his truck ,And we both agreed how life brought us together again to talk about life.

I will forever cherish the laughter we had that day when life brought us both full circle from a kid that hit his work truck with his bike from not looking before crossing the road,Rick is absolutely the greatest guy i meant by complete accident (literally)and will be forever missed, God has opened his arms for another guardian Angel to watch over his family
Go rest in peace Rick and thank you for your service.
