David E. “Dave” Sykes, 72, of Waterloo, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 2, 2026, at UnityPoint-Allen Hospital surrounded by his family.
Dave was born on December 17, 1953, in Waterloo, to George W. and Edith M. Bradford Sykes, Sr. He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1972. Dave was united in marriage to Patricia Reed on April 8, 1989, in Waterloo at Union Missionary Baptist Church.
Dave dedicated 40 years as an assembler for John Deere, retiring in July 2013. He was a member of Community Southern Baptist Church. Dave loved spending his time with his family. He also enjoyed playing basketball, boxing, riding his bike, and drawing.
He is preceded in death by his mother and siblings, George W. Sykes, Jr., John Sykes, June McBlackwell, Eleanor Sykes, and Derrick Sykes.
Dave is survived by his wife, Patricia Sykes of Waterloo; daughters, Dominique Reed and Tiffany Sykes, both of Waterloo, Yakima Sykes and Jaquay of Virginia, and Dava Sykes of Washington, D.C.; stepson, Shauntez Coffer of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; father, George W. Sykes, Sr. of Waterloo; siblings, Frances Sykes, Rosey Gaines, Bobby Sykes, Gregory Sykes, Eddie Sykes, and Khalifah Sykes; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Service: 1:00 pm, Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Community Baptist Church, 522 Anthony St, Waterloo, with family receiving friends for hour prior to the service at the church. Burial to follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

To the sykes family , i’m sorry for your loss. I worked with Dave at John Deere.For many years, always a good friend always seemed to be in a good mood.And he was a lot laughs. I’ll always have great memories of Dave. I will miss him.

To the family: I am so sorry to read of Daviesโ passing. I just read about it in the Pioneer. We worked together at the Engine Works. I have not seen him for years but I have many fond and fun memories. He was one of the great ones. Rest in peace, brother.
