Herbert West Swinton, 88, of Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly, formerly of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died at Bartels on Wednesday, December 19, 2012.

Herb was born November 10, 1924, in Nashua, Iowa, the son of Frederick and Hattie Knutson Swinton. He grew up in Nashua and graduated from Nashua High School in 1943. Herb married Helen Reeves June 12, 1947 in Plainfield and they later divorced. He married Dolores Betz on March 9, 1974, in Waterloo; Dolores died October 9, 2007.

Herb was a meter reader at MidAmerican Energy for 23 years until retiring in 1987. He was a member of Trinity Wesleyan Church in Cedar Falls for many years and enjoyed bicycle riding and walking.

Herb is survived by his son Daniel (Julia) of Lakewood, Colorado; daughter Shari Jo Swinton of Denver, Colorado; daughter Andrea Hartley of Flagstaff, Arizona; stepson Steve (Renetta) Betz of Waverly, Iowa; stepson John Betz of Ft. Worth, Texas; stepson Christopher Betz of Waterloo, Iowa; stepdaughter Jennifer Betz of Ft. Worth, Texas; 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Doris White of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Helen Ascher of Clarksville, Iowa, and Lois Brodt of Waverly; three brothers: Donald (Dorothy) of Waverly, Maurice (Alice) of Dixon, Illinois, and Roger (Marlys) of Shell Rock, Iowa; and sisters-in-law: Bernice Swinton of Waterloo and Donna Swinton of Waverly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters: Mildred Schultz, Wilma Braend and Alfreeda Albaugh; and four brothers: Harold, Willard, Dale and Vernon.
