Dennis J. “Denny” Garthoff, 79, of Waterloo, died Monday, August 24 at his home.

He was born February 22, 1941 in Waterloo, son of Bernard A. and Elda Schultz Garthoff. Denny graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1959. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years during the Vietnam War, receiving an honorable discharge January 10, 1964. After his time in the Navy, Denny returned home and obtained his bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of Northern Iowa.

He married Mary Gene “Genie” Cochran June 12, 1964 at Waterloo First United Methodist Church; she preceded him in death October 10, 2006.

Denny worked at John Deere for a few years. He went on to work for Craft Cochran for over 30 years until 1996. He later worked for Guardian Realtors and also owned and operated many other small businesses, including Sub City II, in the metro area.

Denny was a member of Waterloo VFW Post #1623, Waterloo AMVETS Post #19, Waterloo American Legion Post #138 and Waterloo Eagles Club Aerie #764.

He is survived by two daughters, Lori Gene (Scott) Hansen of Antioch‚ IL, and Sarah Lynn Kubik of Waterloo; a son, Jay Garthoff of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Courtney Hansen, Ashley Kubik, and Jaden Howard; and a great-grandson, Kellcyn Kubik.

Denny is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Genie; and an infant daughter, Laura Lynn.
