Robert E. “Bob” Fahr, longtime President and CEO of Fahr Beverage, respected leader in the beer distribution industry, and lifelong resident of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Bob dedicated his life to his family, his business, his community, and an industry he helped shape over more than five decades. Known as a mentor, trailblazer, and influential leader, he leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the business he led and the many professional accomplishments he achieved.
Born in Waterloo on April 12, 1952, Bob was the son of Ev and Helen Fahr. He graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1970 and attended St. Louis University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce with a focus on marketing and management sciences in 1974. On August 26, 1978, he married Jane Fahr.
Bob’s career with Fahr Beverage began long before he held a leadership title. The family business was founded by his father, Ev Fahr. Bob began working part-time for the business in June 1968 at age 16, having helped with tasks such as cleaning up breakage as early as age five. Over the years, he worked in nearly every aspect of the operation, serving as a vacation driver, merchandiser, driver-salesman, sales representative, sales supervisor, assistant general manager, general manager, and ultimately President and CEO.
In March 1979, Bob became President and CEO of Fahr Beverage, a position he held for decades. His hands-on experience, deep understanding of the business, and commitment to building strong relationships helped establish Fahr Beverage as a respected Anheuser-Busch wholesaler. His leadership reflected a lifetime of dedication to the company, its employees, its customers, and the communities it served.
His influence reached well beyond Northeast Iowa. He was widely respected throughout the beer distribution industry and played an important role in advancing the interests of independent beer wholesalers in Iowa and across the country. He served on the Anheuser-Busch Wholesaler Advisory Panel from 1991 to 1993 and was Anheuser-Busch’s Local Action Coordinator from 1982 to 2000. He was also recognized as an Anheuser-Busch Gold Ambassador from 1983 to 1993.
Bob devoted many years of service to the Iowa Wholesale Beer Distributors Association (IWBDA), serving as a director, vice president, president, and chairman at various points throughout his career. His leadership included serving as president in 1989-1990 and again in 2016-2017, with additional service as chairman in 1991-1992 and 2018-2019. He also served as secretary-treasurer and continued contributing his time and experience to the organization. Bob was a member of the National Beer Wholesalers Association for decades and served on its board of directors from 2008 to 2011.
His peers remember Bob as a mentor to many, a true trailblazer, and a larger-than-life presence whose impact on Iowa’s beer industry is difficult to overstate. His knowledge, leadership, generosity, and willingness to share his experience helped guide generations of industry professionals. The industry he loved is stronger because of his contributions.
Bob’s commitment to Waterloo was equally significant. He believed in giving back to the community he had called home his entire life. His service included the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce, where he served on the board of directors and co-chaired the Economic Development Committee; the Airport Area Development Authority; the Waterloo Airport Commission; the Mayor’s Public Safety Review Committee; the Mayor’s Budget Review Committee; Waterloo Memorial Park; and the Waterloo Convention and Visitors Bureau. He also served on the Board of Governors at Sunnyside Country Club, chaired its clubhouse committee, and contributed to other community and civic initiatives.
Bob’s professional accomplishments were recognized throughout the community. In 2007, he was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame. He also received Sponsor of the Year honors from the Waterloo Bowling Association in 1999, the Waterloo Black Hawks in 2005, and the Waterloo Bucks in 2007, reflecting his support for local organizations and activities.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Fahr; his son, Brett (Kathy) Staudinger; his brother-in-law, Dan Tessmer; special nieces and nephews; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many other family members, friends, colleagues, and employees who will cherish his memory and honor the example he set. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ev and Helen Fahr; his sister, Marlene Klawitter; and his brother, the Reverend John Fahr.
Bob made a lasting impact on Fahr Beverage, the Waterloo community, and the beer distribution industry throughout Iowa and beyond. His passing is a great loss to his family, colleagues, and friends. His legacy will endure in the business he led, the industry he helped shape, and the many lives he touched throughout his life.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on October 30, from 11:00 – 3:00 PM at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave. Private family services will take place prior in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to Hospitality House of the Cedar Valley
Jane we are in Palm Desert but wanted Bob’s family to know we are thinking of you as you celebrate his life and the memories of his contributions to his community and profession. My most recent visits with Bob were when we waiting for our SRT treatments at Acsent. Bob,rest in the peace you have earned. John & Mary Kay
Jane,
Shelley and I can’t begin to express our grief and sympathy for this terrible loss. Bob always kiddingly referred to himself and you as the the “outlaws” (as opposed to “in-laws”), but Shelley and I always felt his and your welcoming warmth at various extended family functions in which you graciously included us. What a huge loss for your family and friends, not to mention the community. I always felt that Bob Fahr was a really, really good dude. Hugs.
Jane.
I was very saddened to hear of Bob’s passing. I often think about the great trip we had down to St. Louis in the “Budweiser Van”.
He will be greatly missed. Sending love a prayers to you and the family. Pat
