Patric D. Nelson, 42, of Ankeny, formerly of Waterloo, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2026, at Iowa Rivers Hospice Home in Marshalltown surrounded by his family.
Pat was born on February 15, 1984, in Waterloo, to Donald and Kimberly (Kotscher) Nelson. He attended Hawkeye Tech and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from University of Northern Iowa.
From an early age, Pat was resourceful and hardworking, pouring concrete with his dad to make lawn ornaments. Over time, he became a skilled handyman and jack of all trades. He later proudly owned and operated his own business, Mystic Toad Painting. Before starting his business, he worked as a laborer for various construction companies.
To know Pat was to love him. He never knew a stranger and loved to make people laugh. With a generous heart, he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Pat loved his family deeply and was especially proud of his son, Nick, and all his accomplishments.
A music buff who loved every genre, Pat especially enjoyed belting out ballads at karaoke with his brother, Sam. Through Sober Soldierz, he formed many lasting friendships and cherished his special bond with Gemma Peters.
He is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, uncle, Kent Kotscher, and father, Donald Nelson, Jr.
Pat will be deeply missed by his mother, Kimberly Nelson of Evansdale; son, Nick Nelson of Ames; brother, Sam Nelson of West Pueblo, CO; nephew, Donovyn Nelson; cousin, Krystle (Josh) Peters; Krystle’s children; and several aunts and cousins.
