Edward Nicholas Wellner

Edward Nicholas Wellner, 98, of La Porte City, died Monday, August 15, 2022, at La Porte City Specialty Care. He was born June 19, 1924, in Jesup, the son of Herbert and Josephine Metcalf Wellner. He was a 1942 graduate of Jesup High School.

Edward married Madeline Friedly on October 31, 1945, in Virginia; she preceded him in death on April 10, 2013.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Ed worked as a machinist for Viking Pump for 16 years, retiring in 1989. Later he was a greeter at Waterloo Sam's Club for 18 years.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Porte City, where he had been an usher and a member of the Men's Club. He was a member of the La Porte City U.S.S. San Diego Post #207. One of Edward's loves was vegetable gardening on a half-acre for over 40 years.

Left to cherish his memories include two sons, Richard (Judy) Wellner of Farragut, TN, Randy (Tammy Beckham) Wellner of La Porte City; two daughters, Diane (Randy) Caldwell of La Porte City; Lisa (Michael) Chase of Maquoketa; a son in law, Harold Kamback of Jesup; sixteen grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife, a daughter, Teresa Kamback, and eight brothers and sisters, Bernard, Leonard, Don, Ralph, Dale, Celeste Merfeld, Mary Mast, and Darlene Briddle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Porte City. Public Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in the West View Cemetery.
