Susan Kay Backen, age 77, of Waterloo, IA, went home to be with the Lord on October 17, 2026. Sue was born on September 14, 1949, in Lakeview, Iowa, to Kenneth and Shirley (Baichtal) Werkmeister.

Sue married Jim Backen, and together they had three children, Kenny, Jimmy, and Teffaney. Although they later divorced, Sue remained devoted to her children, always offering her love, support, and prayers. Her grandchildren lovingly knew her as “Nannie,” a name that held a special place in her heart. She cherished her family and especially enjoyed being a grandmother and great-grandmother.

After graduating from West High School in 1968, Sue worked in housekeeping over the years at VGM, Faith Assembly of God Church, John Deere, the Isle Casino, and Allen Hospital, where she retired in 2012.

Sue’s faith was the most important part of her life. She attended Faith Assembly of God Church for many years. She felt called to be a prayer warrior and spent much of her life lifting up others and asking God to watch over the people she loved; Sue was fiercely known for her prayers. She later attended Hope City Church, where she continued to grow in her faith.

Sue had a generous heart and was always willing to help others. She was the kind of person who would give the shirt off her back to someone in need. Whether someone needed a helping hand, a little encouragement, or someone to pray for them, Sue was there. She gave freely and expected nothing in return, living out the faith that meant so much to her.

Sue also liked her time alone, she spent those quiet moments reading her Bible, listening to worship music, and praising the Lord. She also enjoyed playing games on her phone or computer and, in her younger years, trying her luck at a slot machine!

She is survived by her children, Kenny (Deann) Backen, Jimmy Backen (Tammy McCully), and Teffaney (Ted) Barker; her grandchildren, Arienne (Juan) Martinez, Dallas Backen, Emma Barker, Hannah Backen, Brady Barker, and Abby Barker; her great-grandbabies, Presleigh and Estella; sister Nadine (Larry) Werkmeister; and many nieces and nephews.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Judy, Claudia, Terry, Jerry, Richard, Kim, and David; and her lifelong friend and prayer partner, Maggie Gleason.

Sue’s faith, generosity, and love for her family and friends will be remembered by those who knew her.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, October 22, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Hope City Church, Waterloo, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial in Poyner Township Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the family.
