Mable Lorene Pond, 85, of Waterloo died Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Cedar Stone Senior Living of lung cancer surrounded by her children.
She was born December 7, 1937, in Iowa City, the daughter of Glen and Jessie (Hill) Faulkner. She married Gary Pond on December 31, 1955, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on September 19, 2015.
She worked at Freeman's Cafe for several years. In 1962 Gary and Mable purchased General Retread and changed the name to Waterloo Tire Company. For the next 30 years, they sold tires and did automobile repairs. They retired in 1992 and spent the next 16 years at their summer cabin on Crane Lake, MN. She spent many hours in her boat, the "Mab-a-Lou" catching Walleyes. They sold this cabin and moved back to Waterloo in 2003 due to Gary's health.
Mable was a devoted caregiver to her husband. She believed in hard work and getting things done. She would always go above and beyond to do anything for someone in need. Mable's hobbies were baking, making her famous peanut brittle, collecting and painting on rocks, genealogy, replacing old tombstones, traveling to many foreign countries, smoking cigarettes, flower gardening, dancing, playing cards, watching the Packers, going out to eat, putting puzzles together and attending estate sales. She was known for her luck at the casinos. Coming from meager beginnings, she instilled in her children the value of hard work and perseverance. She was a simple woman with a big heart!
Left to cherish her memory are a daughter Mary (Mark) Ganske and a son Daniel (Donna) Pond, both of Waterloo; a granddaughter Michelle (Jason) Atkin of Fairfax, VA; grandson Matthew (Mariah) Ganske of La Crosse, WI; great grandsons Caleb and Cody Atkin; and great granddaughter Olivia Ganske. She has one sister Sharon Apfel of Waterloo; two brothers-in-law Greg Andersen of Elk Run Heights and Dennis (Deb Morrison) Andersen of Evansdale; and granddoggie Daisy.
Preceded in death by her husband, Gary; two brothers Garrott (Jeree) and Merlyn (Hildegard) Faulkner; two sisters Gleneva Ades, and Velma Hollingshead; and granddoggie Frodo.
