Adranne Newman Howard, 87, of Iowa City and formerly of Waterloo, died on April 24, 2023, while a patient at MercyOne Iowa City. She was born on August 15, 1935, in Havre, Montana, the daughter of Paul and Yvonne Hebert Newman. Adranne graduated from Montana State School for the Deaf and Blind in 1953 and furthered her education at Northern Montana College and the University of Montana, where she earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1957. She received her master's degree from the University of California-Berkely in 1959. Adranne married Wilson "Bill" Howard on April 12, 1970, at First Presbyterian Church in Bryan, Texas. Bill preceded Adranne in death on June 8, 2013.

Adranne taught special education in the Houston Public Schools for ten years. She coached Bill as he worked towards his degree at Texas A&M. Following their marriage, and after the birth of their three children, Adranne devoted her life and energy to her family. She used a no-nonsense approach to her children while pushing them to be the best they could be. She encouraged them in academic excellence, scouting, music, and the arts. In retirement, Adranne and Bill collected dolls. She was a 25-year member of Grace Lutheran Church until she moved to Iowa City following the death of her husband.

Adranne is survived by her children, Spencer (Jennifer) Howard of Iowa City, Jonathan (Gwen) Howard of Saginaw, Michigan, and Rosanne Hunze of Madison, Alabama; grandchildren, Benjamin, Paul, and Abigail Hunze of Madison, AL and Zachary and Evelyn Howard of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her husband and son in law Shawn David Hunze.

Funeral services will be Saturday, May 13, 2023, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, W 8th Street, Waterloo at 2:00 PM with burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
