Doris Jean Oltrogge Hyman, 84, of Waterloo, Iowa, died Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the Denver Sunset Home. She was born December 3, 1937, in Readlyn, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Helena (Wehling) Oltrogge. She was baptized in her parents' home on December 19, 1937, by Pastor Ernst Arbelger and confirmed on March 18, 1951, at Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn. She attended Country School at Franklin #3, Readlyn, and graduated from Readlyn High School in 1955.

After graduating, she was employed at the Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo. She moved to Arlington Heights, IL, where she worked in the office at A.M. Castle & Co. In 1962, Doris moved back to Waverly to work in in the office of Shield Bantam Co.

On April 27, 1963, Doris married Eugene Hyman in Readlyn. They purchased their home in 1964 when Doris started working for Iowa Securities in Waterloo. Later she worked for Banco Mortgage, Norwest E.D.S., GMAC Mortgage, and retired in 2000. She went back to work part-time at CUNA Mutual and finally retired.

They were members of First Lutheran Church, Waterloo, for many years and later, Trinity Lutheran Church, Waterloo. She belonged to the church circle and assisted with funeral lunches.

Doris loved traveling. In 1967, they went to Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada, and toured Quebec and Northeast United States. She and Gene went to East and West Europe to follow the life of Martin Luther, Handel and Bach. They saw the Berlin Wall before it came down. In 2000, she and Gene took the month of May off and flew to Seattle, WA, to help her sister Iris and husband pack for their move back to Waverly to live in the Eichhorn House. In May of 2006, they took a cruise to Alaska. Doris enjoyed life, knitting, gardening, growing flowers, TV, and helping others. They were founding members of the Hawkeye Jim Beam Bottle Club, an international club for collectors. Doris served as membership chair and secretary.

On January 16, 2019, she entered Denver Sunset Home.

She is survived by: her husband, Gene of Waterloo; three sisters, Ilene Blume of Tripoli, Susan (Gaylen) Rundle of Oelwein, Jane (John) Cocuzzi of San Angelo, TX; two brothers, Delbert (LaVonne) Oltrogge of Readlyn, Phillip Oltrogge of Waterloo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by: her parents, three sisters, Daphine Lundt, Iris Wilhelm, and Karen Oltrogge.

Services: will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 1, 2022, at Trinity American Lutheran Church, 605 W 4th St., Waterloo, IA 50702, with burial in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Locke Garden View Chapel, 3655 Logan Ave, Waterloo, Iowa 50703, and also an hour before the service at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Trinity American Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Zion Lutheran Church in Readlyn, Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye, Wounded Warriors, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, or donor's choice.
