Janice Kay “Jan” Schmitt

Janice Kay "Jan" Schmitt, 84, of Waterloo, passed away Wednesday, September 28, 2022, while a patient at Unity Point Allen Hospital in Waterloo and surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 3, 1937, in Waterloo, the daughter of Donald and Allene Donner Roehr. After attending high school at Waterloo West High School, Jan married Thomas Schmitt on November 14, 1954, and to this union, the couple was blessed with two daughters.

To say that Jan loved her entire family would be an understatement. She jumped at every chance to spend time with them and even had a huge collection of photographs of them. To almost everyone who knew her, she was known as "Poopsie." Jan loved playing golf and traveling, both all over the country as well as cruises. She enjoyed time at the family cabin boating and fishing and was an avid sun worshiper. Jan loved decorating for Christmas, literally every room in the house.

Jan loved animals almost as much as her family, especially her dog Murphee, who was her constant companion. She was a practical joker right up until the end of her life and took great joy in being able to pull one over on the family. Even though she hated it, Jan was a very good cook.

Jan is survived by her husband, Tom; daughters Victoria (Bruce) Minard and Constance (Steve) Hix; grandchildren Jessica (Chad) Shipman, Matthew Thompson, Michael (Jose) Thompson, Adam (Megan) Hix, and Lauren (Marcus Steinhauer) Hix; and five great-grandchildren, all of Waterloo. She was preceded in death by her brother Jack Roehr, sister Joan Rogers, and her beloved dog, Murphee.

Visitation for Jan Schmitt will be Monday, October 3, 2022 (Jan's 85th birthday) at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo from 5-7 PM. Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with burial to follow at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery.
