Elaine Ruth Perrigo Jacklin, 95, met her Heavenly Father on Monday, October 23, 2023, while a resident of Keystone Care Center, in Keystone, IA. Elaine was born on September 30, 1928, in Iowa City, the adopted daughter of George and Florence Gritman Perrigo. She graduated from West High School in 1946 and married Russell Jacklin on October 10, 1948. To this union, the couple greeted one son.
Elaine loved her church and her church family. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and became a long-time member of First Lutheran Church after she married. Elaine served as wedding coordinator, taught Sunday school, was a member of Ruth Circle, WELCA president, and served with the Metro Lutheran Council. When her son became ill, she joined Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Evansdale, so her family could worship together.
Elaine is remembered as being a hilariously quirky woman. She loved animals and when John brought various animals home, Elaine allowed them to stay. She loved sweets even though she was allergic to chocolate and looked forward to receiving cupcakes on her birthday. Elaine was not a very good cook but perfected Wiener Soup, a concoction that most of the family didn't even know existed. Mostly Elaine enjoyed spending time with family and friends. And she always had a book in her hand. It wasn't unheard of for her to be reading two books simultaneously.
Elaine is survived by her grandchildren Nichole Marie (Kelana) Efendi Blanchard of Oregon and Sabryna Ann Jacklin of Washington; 3 great-grandchildren; nephews Dr. Michael (Patricia) Tharp of West Liberty, Randy (Marlys) Tharp of Evansdale and Tim Hintz of Waterloo; nieces Cathy (Bill) Olson and Judy (Lynn) Powell, both of Dysart; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, son John Jacklin, and niece Susan Hintz.
Funeral services for Elaine will be Friday, November 3, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 4031 Lafayette Rd, Evansdale, with a visitation for an hour prior to the service. Interment at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo will follow the service. Memorial contributions should be directed to the family.
