James "Frank" Carter, 91, of Waterloo, died Monday, April 3, 2023, at ProMedica Skilled Nursing. He was born August 1, 1931, in Osceola, AR, to Dallas and Vada Carter. At ten years old Frank left school to start working, after the death of his father.
Frank married Frances Paterson January 31, 1953, in Waterloo, she died December 1, 2022. Frank joined the Army on April 4, 1953. After serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, he worked on the line and then in maintenance at Rath Packing for 33 years, until they closed in 1984. He retired in 1988.
He was a long-time member of Linden United Methodist Church. Frank loved fishing, especially catfishing, and salmon fishing in Wisconsin; he would say the stinkier the bait the better. He was admired by his family and others as the hardest working person they knew; he mowed his own lawn until he was 90 years old. He was also regarded as the wisest life educated man, who could also walk on water.
Frank is survived his children: Larry (Denise) Carter of Cedar Falls, Michael (Kathleen) Carter of Waterloo, and Marjorie Babcock of Schaller; a sister, Tinsey Cornsilk of OK; ten grandchildren: Kenny Carter, Dennis (Lora) Carter, Ami (Jeremy) Roeding, Cori (Chad) Hill, Jesi (Wade) Tank, Joe (Amber) Babcock, Jordan (Sarah) Carter, Stephan Carter, Dylan (Hailey) Carter, and Brandi Shephard; eleven great-grandchildren with one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Frances; a son James "JD" Carter; brothers: Herschel, Cleveland, Edward, and Junior Carter; and sisters: Melissa Carter and Virgie La Fountain; and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Babcock.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 7, 2023, at Locke on 4th, 1519 West Forth Street, with visitation one hour prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to the family.
