Goldie Mae Ackley

Goldie Ackley, 90, of Waterloo, formerly of Mablevale Ar, died Sunday, April 23, 2023, at her home surrounded by family. She was born January 20, 1933, in Ottumwa, daughter of Noble and Florence (Makepeace) Calhoon.

Goldie married Merritt Lee "Nick" Ackley on August 15, 1963, in Des Moines. After 38 loving years, he preceded her in death in 2002. For many years Goldie worked as a homemaker, raising their children. She also worked for 13 and a half years at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines doing sterilization and med packs. She previously had worked cleaning homes and as a cook. She liked to crochet and made many afgans. She also liked listening to religious music and attended church regularly. She enjoyed watching TV, especially Family Feud, and listening to books on tape. She was an excellent cook, but most importantly she loved her grandchildren and was the best grandma in the world to them.

Left to cherish her memory and many stories are her nine children: Linda Cruz of IA, Daniel (Judy) Hedden of IA, Brenda (John W Jones) Callaway of Waterloo, Curt (Cindy) Ackley of OR, Edward (Chris) Ackley of IA, Douglas Ackley of FL, Marla Ackley of FL, Gregory Ackley of MO, Diana Gordan of IA; many Grandchildren, Great-grandchildren, and Great-great-grandchildren; and her dog, Mr. Ackley.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nick, three brothers, and two sons in infancy.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM, Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to the family.
