Nancy Stevenson

February 18, 1948 June 11, 2026

Nancy Borchers Stevenson, 78, of Cedar Falls, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at UnityPoint Health-Allen Hospital in Waterloo. She was born on February 18, 1948, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the daughter of Bartel and Eileen Helmicks Borchers.

Nancy attended First Congregational Church and Campus School in Oshkosh. In 1965, she graduated from Oshkosh High School where she sang in the a cappella choir. She earned a bachelor’s degree in teaching economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She later attended the University of Illinois for graduate studies, where she met her husband, James. Nancy married Jim Stevenson on June 19, 1971, at First Congregational Church in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In 1992, she earned a second bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa.

Nancy was passionate about her family and her work as an accountant. She worked part-time while her children were growing up, serving at a variety of firms, including Reed Merner, McGladrey & Pullen, and Loy & Loy. For the past 25 years, Nancy volunteered her tax preparation services through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She was a site coordinator where she helped train new volunteers and served as a quality reviewer of tax returns. Volunteering was one of her greatest passions and became her top priority each year from January through April. In recognition of her service, she received the Governor’s Volunteer Award. In 2026, Nancy was honored for 25 years of service to the RSVP Tax Aide program.

Nancy was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Waterloo for more than 45 years. The church was important to her both spiritually and socially, and she enjoyed participating in weekly Bible study, a church book club, and Women of Faith. Nancy was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter MV and enjoyed attending John Deere retiree potlucks with Jim. She loved attending plays and concerts throughout the Cedar Valley, especially performances at Gallagher Bluedorn, Chamber Music, and the summer concert series at Overman Park.

Nancy loved helping others. For several years, she worked with University of Northern Iowa students as an English language conversation partner, forming many lasting friendships. She also found joy in performing random acts of kindness whenever she saw a need.

Most of all, Nancy loved her family. She cherished living across the street from her son, John, and attending her grandson Samuel’s sports games and her granddaughter Molly’s dance performances. She loved celebrating the accomplishments of her daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and enthusiastically referred friends to her dental practice. Nancy stayed closely connected with her daughter, Emily, through frequent phone calls and photo updates of her granddaughters, Lucy and Jules. She always wanted to know the details of her loved ones’ lives and often kept lists of questions to ask during their conversations. Nancy had a remarkable gift for making those around her feel deeply loved.

Nancy is survived by her husband, James Stevenson of Cedar Falls; her son, John (Jennifer) Stevenson of Cedar Falls; her daughter, Emily (David) Still of Parker, Colorado; four grandchildren, Samuel Stevenson, Molly Stevenson, Lucille Still, and Juliet Still; her sisters, Paula (Robert) Giese of Naperville, Illinois, and Jane (Steve Zamek) Borchers of Los Altos, California; her sisters-in-law, Margaret Hooper of Wilmette, Illinois, and Linda (Richard) Fentriss of Tampa, Florida; her nieces, Elizabeth Filapek, Catherine Hartsell, Laura Wayland, and Allison Fentriss; and her cousins, Linda Presley and Beth Schrader.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Alfred Hooper III.

Nancy was such a kind soul and so very caring to all the many people whom she helped year after year as a tax volunteer. I worked with her the past couple of years as a tax counselor and we will all miss her so very much.

  2. Jim Ostrander says:

So very sorry to hear of Nancy’s passing. She was so kind and caring, and generous with her time and talent. I met her through the Tax-Aide program where she was a leader, mentor, instructor and resource. She will be sorely missed!

  3. Mary Reinke says:

Nancy was my childhood friend from the time I was 10 years old. Even though we lived more than 1,000 miles apart, we stayed in touch throughout the years and always looked forward to seeing each other at our high school reunions. Nancy was one of the smartest people I have ever known, but what I will remember most was her kindness, warmth, and the genuine interest she took in others. I will miss her dearly and will always treasure our lifelong friendship.

  7. Kathy Klink-Zeitz says:

Nancy was one of a kind! She gave so much of herself to family. friends and even strangers. She talked about her family and I meet them through her. When met Emily in person I felt that I already knew her from Nancy’s talks. And when she and Jim bought the house across the street from son, daughter-in-law & grandkids she was afraid to tell me because she thought I’d be mad, but I told her that she was so fortunate that her daughter-in-law wanted her to be closer. I know she and Jim did enjoy their new location. Nancy I don’t think you ever knew how much you were appreciated. And how much you will be missed.
