Charles "Bud" Eggleston, 87, of Traer, died Thursday, September 19, 2024, at Sunrise Hill Care Center, in Traer.
He was born September 22, 1936, in Waverly to Charles and Kathleen (Shephard) Eggleston. He attended his first few years of school in Plainfield before moving to Waterloo. He graduated from East High School in 1954. He was a standout athlete at East where he excelled at baseball and basketball and played on the basketball team that reached the state tournament in 1953 and 1954 as well as the baseball team that won the state championship in 1954. He was offered an opportunity to play semi-pro baseball in Dubuque for the Chicago White Sox but declined.
After high school he joined the US Army and was stationed in Ft. Lewis, Washington and Anchorage, Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1959. He attended Iowa State University on a baseball scholarship, as well as Wartburg college. He went on to work at Rath Packing Company for 11 years as a foreman. He later worked for the Waterloo Recreation Department where he managed many of the events at Young Arena, McElroy Auditorium and Optimist Sports, he retired after 30 years. After retirement, he moved to Mountain Home Arkansas where he enjoyed many years of fishing. Throughout the years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing softball and officiating high school and college baseball and basketball. He enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren's athletic events as well as the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Bud is survived by his four children, Scott (Paula) Eggleston of Bethlehem, GA, Mike (Tami) Eggleston of Highland, IL, Mark (Molly) Eggleston of Cedar Falls, and Pam DeBoer of North Liberty. He is also survived by his special friend of 38 years, Donna Jacoby and her children, Amy (Todd) Stephenson of Cresco, and Carrie (David) Zweibohmer of Denver; 12 grandchildren: Courtney and Jared Eggleston; Emily Pearce; Edward, Elliott, and Everett Eggleston; Jacob, Joshua and Jenna DeBoer; Dustin and Holly Meirick; and Hayley Zweibohmer; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim.
Funeral Services are 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 25, 2024, Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo, with burial in Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville with military honors at the grave conducted by the Clarksville AMVETS Post #30 and the Iowa Army National Guard Funeral Honor Guard. Visitation from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, at Locke at Tower Park. Memorials may be directed to the family.
