Eugene "Gene" Alfred Hyman, 91, of Waterloo, died at home September 3, 2024. He was born February 26, 1933, the son of Louis and Margaret Raatz Hyman in Hawkeye, IA. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawkeye and graduated from Hawkeye High School in 1951. Gene worked for area farmers until he was drafted into the US Army on December 9, 1954. He served the Army at Camp Chaffee, AR, Ft. Carson, CO, and Uijeongbu, Korea. Returning home 2 years later Gene worked for Ross Guyer Implement and Waterloo Implement for 28 years. He then worked for Pioneer Hi-Bred, where he received several awards and retired in 1998. Gene always felt his best award was meeting Doris Jean Oltrogge and marrying her on April 27, 1963, in Readlyn.

Gene loved woodworking and made buggies and a reproduction of an antique school bus. He built needed out building, a garage, barn and a house addition. Gene could repair tractors and lawn equipment and enjoyed growing flowers and vegetables, planting trees, farming part-time and raising animals.

Gene and Doris founded the local Hawkeye Jim Beam Bottle Club, an international club for collectors, and served as president for 3 years. Together they attended many international conventions throughout the United States and assisted Australia's club with a project. He also collected farm toys, toy trains and coins.

In 1962, Gene went to the Expo 62 in Seattle and toured the United States along the way. In 1967, he and Doris traveled to Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada, touring Quebec and Northeast United States. They traveled to East and West Europe to follow the life of Martin Luther, Handel and Bach, and saw the Berlin Wall before it was torn down. In 2006, Gene and Doris went on an Alaskan cruise which they enjoyed very much. Gene participated in the Cedar Valley Honor Flight #25 to Washington, DC, on September 10, 2019.

Gene is survived by a sister Darlene (George) Franks of Hawkeye, IA and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his wife Doris, brothers Robert and Everett Hyman and sister Ruth Lang.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 3 PM at Locke Garden View Chapel, 3655 Logan Ave, with a visitation from 1-3 pm. Burial with military honors will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to the family. On-line condolences may be expressed at www.lockefuneralservices.com.
