Ricky “Rick” L. Lynn Kiefer

Ricky L. "Rick" Kiefer, 65, of Waterloo, died Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. He was born on July 6, 1958, in Waterloo, son of Robert "Earl" and Mary "LaVerna" Butler Kiefer.

He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1976 and graduated from Iowa State University and the American Institute of Business. Later he earned his PhD in Biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Rick married Julie A. Cool on April 26, 1980, at First Congregational Church UCC, in Waterloo.

He owned and operated Kiefer Farms, a third-generation family farm since 1962. He was a lifetime sweetcorn and pumpkin farmer and added greenhouses into his operation in 1999. He worked hard to ensure his family and farm were successful.

Rick spent years traveling the world negotiating United States treaties of non-proliferation regarding nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare. He also spent five years volunteering at the RiverLoop Public Market. Rick was always working on projects, fixing something, or making sure he was taking care of his family.

He was an avid Cyclone's fan.

He is survived by his wife Julie of Waterloo; daughter, Amanda (Brandon) Trebon of Waterloo; two grandchildren, Madi and Kolten Trebon; sister, Reta (John) Humpal.

Rick is preceded in death by his parents, and grandparents.

Funeral services will be 10:30am, Friday, October 20, 2023, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo

Memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to various charities of Rick's choice.
