Shirley Ann Kappel

Shirley Ann Kappel, 85, of Waterloo, died Thursday, November 23, 2023, at Prairie Hills in Independence. She was born June 8, 1938, in Black Hawk County, daughter of Ewald and Rosetta (Sell) Struck. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1955.

Shirley married Wallace Kappel on September 17, 1955, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He died March 20, 2000.

Mrs. Kappel was employed by John Deere for 18 and a half years, until retiring in 1991. She worked at Hinson Manufacturing prior to Deeres.

She was a member of First Congregational Church, where she was involved in various groups. She had also been an active volunteer for Community meals and Meals on Wheels. Shirley was a music lover and loved to dance.

She is survived by her daughters: Peggy (Jeff) Essmann of Waterloo, and Pamela (Randy) Peterson of Waterloo; her son Mark (Melissa) Kappel of Waterloo; five grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; brother Rick (Cheryl) Ackerman of Waterloo; half-brother, Duane (Kristen) Rieken of Iowa Falls; and half-sister, Debby Elliot of Waterloo.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Wallace; sisters, Arvella (Sam) McCombs, and Betty Ackerman; and half-brother, Dick (Diane) Struck.
