Arlin Schmidt, 93, of Waterloo, died Saturday, October 14, 2023, at NorthCrest Specialty Care.

He was born October 30, 1929, in rural Black Hawk County, son of Theodore and Marie Steinbroon Schmidt. He graduated from Readlyn High School in 1947. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Beverly Leonhart June 27, 1970, at St. John Lutheran Church in Denver.

Arlin was a master carpenter who worked for various contractors over the years, most notably for Harry Braun, retiring in 1989. He also built houses for Habitat for Humanity.

He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waterloo, where he was active in various capacities including the properties board and serving as an elder. He and Bev enjoyed traveling including many memorable bus trips.

Arlin is survived by his wife, Beverly of Waterloo; son, Kirk (Heather) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Rev. Harold Schmidt of Omaha, and Rev. Lawrence (Jane) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Edith Armbrecht of Marshalltown, Doris Camann of Clintonville, WI, and Mary (Jim) Brooke of Machesney Park, IL; and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ted Schmidt; three sisters, Margaret Moldenhauer, Mildred Hesse, and Frieda Traetow; a half brother, Ray Simmer; a half sister, Agnes Rikkels; and four other half siblings.

Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 17, at Grace Lutheran Church with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Military honors by Denver American Legion Post #653 and the Iowa Army National Guard funeral honor guard. Visitation for one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the church or Habitat for Humanity. Condolences may be left at www.LockeFuneralServices.com.
