Max Kriz, 88, of Waterloo, died on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at his home.
He was born September 25, 1935, on the family farm in Traer, the son of Allen and Marion (Eckhardt) Kriz. He graduated from Traer High School in 1954 and obtained his certification in turbine mechanics from Hawkeye Tech. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-1960.
Max married Joan C. Weed on June 10, 1961, at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo; she preceded him in death on December 13, 2011.
He was a turbine mechanic for Midwest Utility (IPS) for 34 years, retiring in 1993. After his retirement, he enjoyed working on racecars and building racecar parts. In his younger years, he enjoyed snowmobiling. Later in life, he enjoyed riding his three-wheel bicycle, including one summer where he rode over 1200 miles.
Max was a former member of the Washburn Moose Lodge, where he played in the pool league, and the Waterloo Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #764. He was also a member of IBEW Local 288, and former member of Waterloo AMVETS Post #19, and Evansdale AMVETS Post #31.
While he had many hobbies, Max's grandchildren always came first. He made them breakfast and took them to school almost every day, and often assisted with laundry. He took them trout fishing and spent his time helping them catch their limit instead of fishing himself.
Max is survived by his son, Jeff Kriz of Waterloo; daughters-in-law, Lisa Kriz of Waterloo, and Amy Kriz of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Joshua (Laura) Kriz, Chad (Kate) Kriz, Brittni (Torri) Bates, Miranda (Travis) Brown, and Patrick Kriz; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents and wife; a son, Michael Kriz; and two sisters, Lizzy Barge and Peggy Bradley.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2024, at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post #31 honor guard and US Marine Corps funeral honor guard.
