Charles Clair Thoms

Charles C. "Chuck" Thoms, 88, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, May 2, 2024, at NewAldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls. He was born June 3, 1935, in Grundy Center, son of William and Clara (Ramundt) Thoms. Chuck graduated from Traer High School in 1955. He served in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge.

He married Joan M. Hughes on March 5, 1976, at Central Christian Church in Waterloo; she preceded him in death on August 1, 2022. They met in 1975 while working together at Chamberlain Mfg. Joan was an inspector, and Chuck was in research and development during the development of the Patriot missile. For 11 years they enjoyed their cabin in Mt. Auburn on the Cedar River. He later worked at Viking Pump for 25 years, retiring in 1997. Chuck was a member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49 and had flown on the 2014 Honor Flight.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews, and several good friends at New Aldaya and Marlys Becker of Waterloo.

Chuck is preceded in death by his wife, Joan Thoms and their beloved Pomeranian, Riley; three brothers: Raymond (Grace), Harry (Marilyn), and Harold (Nelly) Thoms; and sister; Dorothy (Arnold) Williams.

Funeral services are 10:30 am, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at NewAldaya LifeScapes Chapel, Cedar Falls, with burial will in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Military Rites by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post #49 and Iowa Army National Guard. Visitation is 4:00 to 6:00 pm, Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, Waterloo.
