Timothy Paul "Tim" Ettelson, 75, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, surrounded by his family.
He was born on April 26, 1949, in Grinnell, son of Lyle Sr. and Darlene (Casady) Ettelson. He graduated from Newton High School in 1967.
Tim's journey began at Central College, where he excelled athletically. As a student-athlete, he showcased his talents on the golf course and wrestling mat, which would have a lasting impact on his life. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1974.
He married Teri Kober on July 18, 1980, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Tim was a middle school science teacher for 35 years, mostly at Hudson, but including four years at West Branch. He also enjoyed coaching, where he led the boys golf team to state championships in 1995 and 1996 and serving as an assistant coach for the 2003 and 2004 state wrestling championship teams. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 2012. Tim impacted countless lives with his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support. His love for teaching and coaching was evident in everything he did, inspiring generations of students and athletes to reach their fullest potential. He led a life of passion and dedication to his family and community.
Tim's greatest joy was found in the loving embrace of his family and friends. Tim's legacy lives on through his family who will forever cherish his memory.
He is survived by his wife, Teri of Hudson; his five children and eight grandchildren: Jon (Monica) Ettelson of Dana Point, CA, and their children, Jessi, Stephen, Hunter, Bryce; Jared (Amy) Ettelson of Glenwood Springs, CO, and their children, Reece and Kira; CJ (Dasha) Ettelson of Aurora, CO, Charlie (Tiffany) Ettelson of Denver, CO, and Mandy Ettelson of Cedar Falls, and her children, Lyla and Rylee; two great-grandchildren, Marlowe and Finn; and his siblings, Lynda Collins, and Ed (Linda) Ettelson, both of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Tim will be remembered for his unwavering integrity, selflessness, humor, and zest for life. His legacy of love, laughter, and inspiration will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo. Tim was never one to dress up for an occasion.
