Leona Mae Albert, 92, of Washburn, died Monday, March 17, 2025, at La Porte City Specialty Care in La Porte City.

She was born January 16, 1933, in rural Benton County, the daughter of Kuno and Dora Clara Margarete (Lenius) Ohrt. She married Kenneth Albert December 24, 1950, at First Congregational Church in Waterloo; he died November 16, 2004.

Leona worked at the Woolworth Store in Waterloo while she raised five children. She worked as a cook for years at Byron Day Care in Waterloo. She then worked for three years in traction and sterile processing at Schoitz Hospital. After that, she went to work at the Happy Time Day Care as a cook. She finished her career working in the cafeteria at Hawkeye Tech.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Washburn, where she had been a member of a church circle, church council, Bethel group, taught Sunday school, and in her younger years, sang in the choir. She was a member of the YWCA and Red Hat Club. She was a buddy reader for Waterloo Public Schools. She also played the accordion, piano, and organ. She loved gardening, canning, camping, family vacations, and reading magazines. She loved the outdoors and sunshine.

In her younger years, she and Kenny loved to dance and play cards. Kenny and Leona met at the Forum Roof Dance Hall. They courted for a year and married on Christmas Eve in 1950, right before Kenny was deployed to the Korean War. Kenny and Leona lived in Clear Lake and then moved to Washburn where they resided on Third Street for almost 52 years.

Leona is survived by two sons, Greg (Deb) Albert of Dubuque, and Mike Albert of Wilmar, MN; a daughter, Laurie (Kevin) Conner of Urbandale; five grandchildren, Jeff Albert, Sara Albert, Carli (David) Kocher, Zach Albert, and Devon (Megan) Albert; four great-grandchildren, Barrett Michael Johnson, Leah Raelynn Albert, Valen Richard and Sullivan Gordon Kocher; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Albert of Elk Run Heights; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Ohrt.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Randall "Bones" and Edward Albert; an infant daughter, Pamela Jean Albert; three brothers, Leo, Leonard, and Chester Ohrt; and a daughter-in-law, Laura Albert.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave., Waterloo, with burial at West View Cemetery in La Porte City. Visitation for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to La Porte City Specialty Care. Condolences may be left at www.LockeFuneralServices.com.
