Dean Allen Fagerlind

Dean Fagerlind, 88, of Waterloo, died Friday, April 11, 2025, at Friendship Village. He was born April 8, 1937, in Waterloo, son of Carl and Edith (Schake) Fagerlind. Dean graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1955 and served in the US Army during the Korean War.

Dean was married to Kathy Kilson, and they later divorced. He married Nola Dale Hansen on March 23, 1991, at St. Paul Church of Christ in Denver. She preceded him in death on December 17, 2018.

He started his professional life selling toys for Iowa Toy Company. He then attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology and received a degree in Horticulture Science. This allowed him to turn his love of golf from a hobby to a profession as the golf course superintendent of South Hills, Gates, and then Byrnes Park. Ultimately becoming the Director of Golf for all three municipal courses.

Dean was a member of the Iowa Superintendent Association and was a past Superintendent of the year. He was a member of the Elks Club and also worked there for many years. His pride and joy were the Junior Golfers of Waterloo. He wanted every kid to be able to experience the game and often found ways to provide clubs for kids who couldn't afford them.

He is survived by his sons: Steve (Beth) of Readlyn, Mike (Ann) of Peosta, and Joe (Kim) of Monticello; Robert Hansen and Chris Hanson of Waterloo, and Cathy Hansen of Louisville Kentucky; grandchildren: Jimmy (Kelsey), Michelle, Daniel, Gabrielle, Jessica, Christy (Andrew), Sarah (Brandon), Rebecca (Garrett), Lindsey, Andrew, Alex, and Trey; and several great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nola; grandson John Michael Fagerlind, and sister Joyce Fink.
