Joan (Jo) Katrine Broshar passed away Saturday, July 4, 2026. She was born on November 26, 1933, to Joseph William and Maren Katrine Schumann in Waterloo, Iowa. She graduated from West Waterloo High School in June 1952 and went on to the University of Iowa at Iowa City. Jo graduated with high honors in Business Administration in June 1956. At Iowa, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honorary, and Beta Gamma Sigma business honorary.

She married James (Jim) Broshar in June 1956. During Jim’s career with AT&T, Jo and their two children, Julie and John, moved with him from coast to coast. Jo served as an administrative assistant to bankers, lawyers, and company presidents over the years and later studied to become a paralegal. She worked for several law firms in Omaha, NE, then joined Sidley and Austin as a paralegal specialist in the Chicago office and later in their New York office. When Jo and Jim moved to Scottsdale, AZ in1987, they formed a telecommunications consulting business. They retired there in 1996. In 2005, they moved to the Terraces of Phoenix where Jo served as treasurer and president of the Resident Association and Council.

Jo loved the arts and spent many years engaging in music and dance studying Dance, piano and violin. She choreographed high school musicals and special events. At the University of Iowa, she played the bagpipes and danced with the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders. As president of the Iowa U Orchesis Modern Dance Club, Jo was instrumental in presenting the first modern dance recital on the Iowa U campus. In later life, she danced in and choreographed musicals for community theater in several cities. Jo was a member of P.E.O., Assistance League of Phoenix, and Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Associations.

Jo always said she was glad she married a man who loved to travel. She and Jim traveled extensively throughout the world and every key city and location in the US. She also enjoyed her time with her grandchildren when they came to visit Grammy and Grampa in Scottsdale or with their trips to Minneapolis or Chicago to see the grandkids’ sports games, activities and during holidays – especially the Fourth of July.

Jo is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister, Donna Walker, and her granddaughter, Alexandra (Ali) Broshar. She is survived by her children, Julie Tuttle (Brian) of Shorewood, MN, John Broshar (Lori) of Chicago, IL, four grandchildren, Beth Tuttle Tunis (Brian), Michael Tuttle (Jessica), Connor and Ryan Broshar, and four great-grandchildren, Owen and Stella Tuttle, and Baker and Belle Tunis.

Jo’s memorial service will take place at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, in Waterloo, IA. at 11:30AM Saturday July 18, 2026, with visitation one hour prior to the service.

The Family requests memorials in Jo’s name go to the Alzheimer’s Association or, The University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
