Carter James Burke, 24, died Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at Mercy One Des Moines. He was born October 20, 2000, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, son of John M. and Raquel R. “Kelly” (Buttjer) Burke. Carter moved around in his early years, from Mason City, Rockford, Delmar, NY, Altoona and Johnston, IA. He lived most of his time in Rockford and graduated from Johnston High School.

He was living at Childserve in Johnston, surrounded by amazing and caring staff who took care of Carter during his time there. Carter enjoyed his special videos and watching Barney “Go to the Zoo”. It was his go to and it never got old to him. He enjoyed his music and would listen to his songs and spending time gaming with his brother, Spencer. Carter had a special connection to Sadie, his golden retriever and he tolerated his kitties- Shooee and Memphis.

Carter is survived by his parents, John and Kelly Burke of Odessa, TX. His brother, Spencer Burke of Odessa, TX. His maternal grandparents, Alan and Janet Buttjer of Rockford, IA and paternal grandma, Susan Burke of Cedar Falls, IA. Carter’s aunts, Rhonda Buttjer of Rockford, and Jennifer (Frito) Burke of Ashburn, VA. His cousin, Megan Buttjer of Rockford.

He is preceded in death by his grandpa, James Burke and several great aunt and uncles.

Funeral services will be 10:30am, Thursday, August 21, 2025, at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church, Hudson.

Burial will be in the Hudson Cemetery, Hudson, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00pm Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Locke at Tower Park.
