Richard Dick Obadal, 91, of Cedar Falls, was found deceased at home on October 10, 2025. He was born in Pocahantas, IA on June 9, 1934, the son of Louis Obadal and Mary Smutny Obadal. After graduating from Waterloo West High School in 1952, Dick attended school for a while at Iowa State and married Darlene Adams on June 18, 1955, in Waterloo. The couple was blessed with two sons. Dick worked as a draftsman for John Deere where he retired after 32 years. He got his love for drafting while a student at West. Dick was drafted into the US Army in 1956 and served for two years.
Dick was a man who blazed his own trail. He was meticulous and even designed and built his own house which he lived in until his death. Dick enjoyed outdoor activities over the years including cross country skiing, fishing, horseshoes, and golf. For the past 20 years, he enjoyed biking, especially along the Cedar Valley Trails, and that included biking during the winter. Dick was a good father, spending time with his boys’ development with cub scouting and coaching them. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Aaron Rogers (though not necessarily the Packers!) Marrying Darlene was the turning point of his life and was what he considered the most important event of his life. Dick also was the developer of many patents, including a hydraulic tractor seat stabilization mechanism.
Dick is survived by his sons, Steven (Katie) Obadal of Cedar Rapids and Todd Obadal of Waterloo, and grandson, Alexander Obadal of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his wife Darlene, and siblings Ernest, Stanley, Martha, and Betty.
