Grant L. Price, 85, of Waterloo, died Friday, after a short illness. He was born in Melville, Saskatchewan, Canada on November 11, 1922, son of Leon B. and Vera I. Hodgen Price.

Grant married Fadra Davis on October 24, 1948 in Waterloo. Together they raised their daughters Laurie and Julie and were wonderful grandparents to Emily, Luke, Andrew, Sarah and Matt. While he was best known for his work in broadcasting, his best times were spent with his family.

After growing up on a ranch in Nebraska, he went on to Morningside College and American University. He left there to join the Navy. Upon his return he got a job at KTRI in Sioux City. From that time onward, Iowa Broadcasting felt his presence.

Grant’s time on the ranch made him a skilled horseman, guitar player, handyman, photographer and storyteller. These talents provided many wonderful memories for his daughters and grandchildren. He also loved woodworking, gardening and remodeling. The results can be seen around the homes of all his family members.

His generosity was not confined to his family. Grant was very involved with his church and with many community organizations. Over the years he was a board member for Iowa Public Television; Grin and Grow Day Care; Waterloo Cedar Valley Food Bank; Waterloo Self Help Foundation; Waverly National Board – CROP/Community Hunger Appeal; Church World Service Family Service Agency-Cedar Rapids; Cedar Rapids Area Council of Churches and the Linn County Citizens Committee on Drug Abuse.

Grant received great joy from his time as a Professor at Wartburg College. He loved working with the students and helping to teach another generation of true journalists. Like the broadcasters that worked for him at KXEL, WMT and KWWL, students learned that he always gave his best and expected nothing less than their best. They also knew that you could have no stronger advocate in your corner. Those that knew him, know that he has not stopped watching and supporting them.

He was preceded in death by Fadra. He is survived by his daughter Laurie (Christopher) Kemp of St. Paul, their children: Luke Kemp and Sarah Kemp; daughter Julie (Mark) Barnd of Marion, their children: Emily (Greg) Saveraid, Andrew Barnd and Matt Barnd; brother Edward Price of O’Neil, NE; sisters-in-law: Wihlma Price of Hastings, NE and Wanda Brigman of Los Angeles, stepson Jack (Donna) Deibert of Edgewood, WA, their children: Kathy, Kirk, Theresa and Brenda; and many, close and dear friends and co-workers.

Dad passed from this world peacefully into the waiting arms of the Lord at the end of the 6 PM local newscast.
