Edwin Lyle Hodgin
Edwin Lyle Hodgin was born in Cresco, Nebraska on June 20, 1932, the son of Maxie D. and Minnie Gustafson Hodgin. When he was four years old, Lyle's family moved to a farm south of Waterloo where he grew up. He graduated from Orange Township High School in 1949 and then attended Iowa State College (now ISU) for one year before returning to the family farm. He met his future wife Donna Tucker while driving a school bus for Orange Township School where Donna was teaching. They were married June 22, 1952.
Lyle and Donna started their married life on the family farm where they raised their three children, Joy, Randy, and Jeff. In 1963 they moved to Hudson, Iowa where they lived for 37 years. Over the course of his career, Lyle sold Walnut Grove Livestock Feed and Badger Farm Equipment, traveled the U.S. and Europe as a salesman for Universal Industries of Hudson, drove a tank wagon truck for DX and for the Hudson Co-op, and was CEO of Members Mutual of Waterloo until his retirement in 1994. After retiring, he enjoyed driving trucks for Waterloo Industries and NuriJect Systems of Hudson. In 2000, Lyle and Donna moved to their home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After Donna's death in 2019, Lyle moved to Windhaven Assisted Living Center in Cedar Falls.
Lyle loved to fish, especially with Donna and his family. He loved camping, and he and Donna traveled all over the United States in their motorhome. He loved to sing and was a member of Iowa State Singers in college and sang in Barbershop Quartets for much of his life. Lyle loved to fly. He was a member of AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) for most of his adult life and part-owner of a Piper Cherokee, his pride and joy for many years. He especially enjoyed attending and cheering on his kids and grandkids in all their activities.
Lyle died May 2, 2021 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo at the age of 88. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister Marian Christiason of Cedar Falls, Iowa; his children Joy (Dave) Tokheim of Osceola, Iowa, Randy (Teresa) Hodgin of Hudson, Iowa, and Jeff (Cindi) Hodgin of Hudson, Iowa; his grandchildren Erin (Niels) Kongshaug, Jaime (Brent) Bonner, Brandon (Emily) Hodgin, Andrea (Brandon) Kampman, Lee (Molly) Hodgin, and Sara Hecht; and his great-grandchildren Riesa, Emilia, and Finn Kongshaug, Addsion and Lillian Bonner, Brody and Alivia Hodgin, Levi and Paige Kampman, Payton, Ellie, Stella, and Hattie Hodgin, and Quinnlyn and Bowen Hecht. Lyle will also be greatly missed by many other family members and many friends.
