Charles F. “Chuck” Stilwill, 88, passed away on November 6, 2025, at his home. Chuck was born on September 21, 1937, in Indianapolis.
Growing up in Chicago, Chuck caught the acting bug in college. Although he was an industrial engineering major at Iowa State University, he auditioned for “My Three Angels” on a whim and won the lead role. After that, Chuck transferred to The Pasadena Playhouse, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BTA (Bachelors of Theatre Arts) in acting. Later, he pursued a master’s degree in acting and directing from NYU. Chuck continued his education with two founding members of the Group Theater, studying directing with four-time Tony Award winner Harold Clurman and acting with Robert Lewis.
After acting and directing all over the country, including Off-Broadway, Chuck became the Artistic and Managing Director of Waterloo Community Playhouse in 1970. During his career, Chuck was involved in over 600 productions and worked with thousands of actors. Chuck’s extraordinary talent was drawing amazing performances from his actors.
Chuck retired from WCP in 2014 but continued working in the theater as an actor, director, and producer. At the time of his death, he was very active with the First Baptist Church and served on volunteer boards at Friendship Village.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, children Alison, Tyler and Jeremy.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, November 12th at First Baptist Church, 434 Baltimore Street, Waterloo Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Waterloo Community Playhouse, 224 Commercial St., Waterloo, or the First Baptist Church. Online condolences may be expressed at www.lockefuneralservices.com.
