Donald R. Steiert, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
Don was born on March 18, 1939, growing up on a farm outside of Garwin, Iowa, where he raised Hereford cattle and enjoyed showing them at the county and state fairs. Don graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1957. He married Judith Ann Sonksen on October 15, 1960, in Gladbrook, Iowa; she preceded him in death on July 29, 2020. After high school, Don served in the United States Army, including time served in Germany. He worked at John Deere for over 30 years.
Don had many interests, and they evolved over the years. He enjoyed bowling, weekend farm help on the Sonksen Farm, attending hockey games, hunting, trap shooting, golf, fishing trips to Lake Ida in Minnesota, mowing, snow blowing, morning coffee with friends at Panera and an almost daily trip to Dairy Queen for his favorite small twist cone. Don could fix or come up with a "way to fix" anything. If only you could have seen his garage and basement workshop. He loved helping others and was always there to support and care for his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Hilda (Rohwer) Steiert, his sisters, Joanne Hill, Janice Sevey and Margy Aldrich.
Don is survived by his three daughters, Cindy (Dane) Dierks of Cedar Rapids, Tracy (Randy) Freese of West Des Moines, Christy (Jeff) Frese of Ely; five grandchildren, Megan (Tom) Zlahtohlavek of Lenexa, KS, Jordan (Toni) Dierks of Kansas City, MO, Katie Dierks of Cedar Rapids, Tristan and William Frese of Ely; great-grandchild, Jake Zlatohlavek and Don's sister, Sue (Mike) Moscarelli.
