Janice Marie Lewis

Janice Marie Kohls Lewis, 84, of Evansdale, died Monday, December 18, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in West Union, IA on May 20, 1939, the daughter of Albert and Mildred Ishman Kohls. Janice graduated from Waterloo West High in 1957 and married Donald Lewis on December 17, 1960. To this union, the couple was blessed with three children. Janice worked as a bookkeeper for Claasen Engineering.

Janice was a hard-working woman who passed that work ethic onto her children and grandchildren. For Janice, being involved in their lives was part of who she was. She had high expectations but is remembered as having a bark that was worse than her bite. Janice was proud of her grandchildren and enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, card playing, and picnics. For a while, Janice worked with the Urban Renewal Department of Evansdale, and was instrumental in the development of Evansdale, including the building of the dike. She was also passionate about her roots and thus was interested in genealogy. And if she didn't like your driving skills, Janice might just show you how she felt.

Janice is survived by her children, Kim (Roxane Allen Thielen) Lewis of Elk Run Heights, Tammi (Dwayne) Kent and Julie (Mark) Mallow, both of Waterloo; grandchildren Donald (Heather Clark) Lewis, Daniel (Stephani) Lewis, Joshua (Misty Johnson) Halbfass, Christi Larson, and Eric Kent; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and siblings Dennis (Donna) Kohls and Cindy (Jim) Kirchoff. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Joe Larson; her husband; sister Marge (Larry) Thome; and nephew David Kohls.

Memorial Service for Janice will be Friday, December 22, 2023, at 10:30 AM, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, with inurnment at Garden of Memories Cemetery to follow. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM, Thursday, December 21, at Locke at Tower Park. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be directed to Cedar Bend Humane Society in memory of Janice.
