James Edward Mather

James “Jim” Edward Mather, 77, of Waterloo, died Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Friendship Village Wellspring Living. He was born December 12, 1947, in Waterloo, son of Curtis and Effie (Walters) Mather. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1966 and then attended Upper Iowa where he earned a teaching degree, majoring in History. He went on to earn a Master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

James enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1968 and retired from the US Army as a Command Sergeant Major after 34 years. In the Army he specialized in Communications. James also taught at several schools within the Waterloo Community School District throughout his 35 years as an educator.

He was a member of the Waterloo Lions Club for many years. He was also involved in the Cedar Falls and Waterloo Softball Associations as an umpire and player. James was an avid bowler, and enjoyed spending his time reading or being with his family. He adored his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed travel including road trips that lasted for weeks.

Survived by his children: Jim (Dana) Mather, and Michelle Mather of Rogers, AR, and Ben (Kristen) Mather of Cedar Falls; stepdaughter Regan (Bart) Bishop; grandchildren Dominic and Kenley Mather, step-grandchildren Abby Vanderman, Jesse Bishop and Jayden Bishop; and brother Curtis (Linda) Mather.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Jane Roof, his parents, a baby sister Mary Anne, and his first wife Patricia Corsello.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Ave, with funeral service starting at 11:00 on December 10. Burial will take place in Waterloo Cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be directed to the family.
