Ruby F. Smith, 93, of ManorCare Health Services, died Thursday, April 6, at ManorCare.

She was born June 15, 1912, in Clarinda, daughter of Ralph and Gertrude Sullivan Myers. She married Harold L. Smith Feb. 14, 1932, in Waterloo. Harold, Waterloo fire chief from 1962 until his retirement in 1980, died Oct. 30, 1999.

She graduated from East High School in 1930. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Bridge Club, Waterloo Women’s Club, United Methodist Women, Iowa Fire Chiefs Association Auxiliary, had been a Girl Scout leader, and was past president of the Irving School PTA.

Survived by: a son, Dale (Betty) of Tupelo, Miss.; a daughter, Susan (Dennis) Hoppenworth of Waterloo; four grandchildren, Deborah Smith of Overland Park, Kan., Julie Hudson of Mandeville, La., Cynthia Hutchens of Superior, Colo., and Jason Hoppenworth of Waco, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Blake and Cass Hudson and Noah Hutchens.

Preceded in death by: her husband; an infant son, Bruce; a grandson, Bruce Smith; a brother, James Myers; and a sister, Ruth Kuenstling.
