February 2, 1937 – December 14, 2025

George A. Petcavage, 88, of Harpers Ferry, IA, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2025, in Waterloo, IA.

George was born on February 2, 1937, in New Rochelle, New York, to George Paul Petcavage and Margaret Catherine (Whalem) Petcavage.

In 1954, George enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving for 21 years on active duty and an additional 10 years in the Fleet Reserve. Rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, George “Doc” Petcavage served as a Corpsman aboard various ships, including the USS Moctobi, throughout Asia, and completed four tours in Vietnam. His service was marked by dedication, leadership, and commitment to his fellow sailors. He received multiple awards and commendations, including two Navy Unit Commendations, five Good Conduct medals, the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation with palm, and Vietnam Civil Actions Ribbon, with palm.

After retiring from the Navy, George moved to Waterloo, IA, where he met his wife, Marcia Vivian (Chandler) Petcavage. They married on March 26, 1977, in Independence, IA. In his second career, George worked as a parts desk salesman at Dey Appliance Parts, retiring in 1999 to Harpers Ferry, IA. George was an avid fisherman, a phenomenal cook, and always had a story and a beer to share with his friends (or soon to be friends).

George is survived by his son, George F. Petcavage; his daughter-in-law, Jessica H. Petcavage; his grandchildren, George J. Petcavage and Cate R. Petcavage, along with a large extended family who loved him dearly. He is preceded in death by his wife on March 3, 1992, his parents, and his sister, Joan Nancy Bessette.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, April 25, 2026 at Locke Garden View Chapel with inurnment in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites by AMVETS Post #49 and United States Navy Honor Guard. Visitation from 11:00 AM until services at 1:30 PM. Additionally, a Celebration of Life will take place in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, in the spring of 2026. Memorials may be directed to the family.
